Thunderstorm Asthma: When Stormy Weather Takes Your Breath Away

Lightning and storm clouds over a waterfront city frame the headline “Thunderstorm Asthma” and subtitle “When the forecast affects your breathing.

Thunderstorms can bring more than dramatic skies. Under certain conditions, especially when grass pollen levels are high, pollen grains can break into tiny fragments that storm winds concentrate near the ground. These particles can travel deep into the lungs and trigger coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or an asthma attack. Called thunderstorm asthma, this uncommon but potentially serious event can affect people with asthma—and those with seasonal hay fever who have never been diagnosed with asthma. Poorly controlled asthma increases the risk. Not every storm creates these conditions. (betterhealth.vic.gov.au)

If you have asthma or pollen allergies, check weather and pollen forecasts, and head indoors before the storm’s gusty winds arrive. Keep windows and doors closed during the storm. Follow your prescribed treatment, keep your reliever inhaler accessible, and have an asthma action plan. (betterhealth.vic.gov.au) Seek medical advice for new wheezing or breathlessness. Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty, trouble speaking, or an attack that is worsening or not improving with prescribed reliever treatment. (mayoclinic.org) Let the sky do the rumbling—your lungs don’t need to join the percussion section.
